Recording other RTP audio (Generic RTP)

Generic RTP records any source that sends plain RTP audio without call signalling, such as a Mindshare console's audio mix. Each stream is a channel, sent either to a multicast group or straight to the RockRecorder server (unicast).

You need to be a SuperAdmin, and the server needs the Generic RTP license.

What the source must send

  • RTP audio in G.711 µ-law, G.711 A-law or G.729. Other formats are ignored.
  • To a multicast group and port, or to the RockRecorder server's IP address and a port.
  • One stream per port.

1. Add the interface

  1. Open the user menu (top right) and go to Administration > Recording > Recording Interfaces.
  2. Click Add recording interface.
  3. Give it a name, choose Recorder Type: Generic RTP, and pick the Network Interface (NIC) the audio arrives on.
  4. Click Create Recording Interface.

2. Add the channels

On the Channels tab, for each stream:

  • Address: the multicast group, or leave it blank for unicast (audio sent straight to this server).
  • Port: the port the source sends to. Each port can only be used by one channel on the server.

Click Add, then Apply at the top of the interface page.

For many streams, use CSV > Import from CSV… with the columns channel,address,port,gain_db,enabled, for example Console 1 mix,,7000,0,1 (unicast) or Console 2 mix,239.3.3.2,7002,0,1 (multicast).

3. Choose how recordings are split

By default, everything the source sends is recorded, and a recording ends when the source stops sending for a second. A source that sends all the time, even when nobody is talking, makes one long recording, saved in 4-hour parts. For that kind of source, turn on voice activation on the Settings tab, under Voice activation (VOX):

Setting What it does Default
Record only when there's sound Only record when it's louder than the level below Off
Start recording above How loud it must get to start recording (-60 to -20 dB) -45 dB
Stop after this much quiet Pauses shorter than this stay in one recording (1 to 10 seconds) 2 seconds

Click Save, then Apply.

4. Check it's working

Make some audio on the source. The recording appears on the Recordings page when it ends. Generic RTP has no talker information, so the Alias and UID columns stay blank.

The recorder's log, /opt/rockrecorder/logs/rtp.log, shows what's happening:

Log says Meaning
Listening on … → 'Console 1 mix' The channel is set up
Saved … (12.34s) A recording was saved
Ignoring RTP payload type … The source sends a format that isn't recorded. Set it to µ-law, A-law or G.729
Could not listen on … The port or address can't be used. Check the channel

Nothing in the log? The audio isn't reaching the server. See A channel has no recordings.
